  • B.A. French, Lawrence University, 2001
  • D.A.L.F. - Institut de Touraine (native speaker certificate)

  • Academic Interests: Marie Antoinette, French cinema, Francophone literature specifically French African Female authors, and Resistance literature.
  • Personal Interests: Mixed media arts, soccer, the 1940's, travel, linguistics and DIY projects.
  • I spent my entire senior year in Germany as an exchange student with a Congressional Scholarship Program and I believe strongly in student exchange.

Claire Breaux

    Bonjour et Bienvenue!

My name is Claire Breaux, a native speaker of French and certified by the French Ministry of Education as a native speaker.  This academic year I will teach a few sections of French Two, French III Pre-AP, and French IV AP, manage the French Club and the French National Honor Society.  This will be my 6th year at Spring Woods.  My campus information is as follows:
Campus Room 274        Extension 3254

First Period        = French Three Pre-AP
  Second Period   = Conference Period
  Third Period       = French Two
  Fourth Period     = French Two
  Fifth Period        = French Two
  Sixth Period       = French Two
Seventh Period  = French IV AP
Essentially, foreign language courses are communications courses.  So, communicating, on all levels, is important and will continue to be throughout the students’ academic careers.
·Ask questions – don’t be shy, don’t be afraid! If you knew the answer already, it wouldn’t be “foreign” language.
· Communicate - I can’t help you out if I don’t know you are struggling! Let me know and I will make myself available to help you. I am free before and after school, as well as lunch periods (with notice) and I am willing to negotiate meeting to help you succeed.
· Hang in there! - Quizzes are your progress report; if you bomb one, then you know you need to study for vocabulary or grammar, as the case may be.   Don’t get down - I encourage you to talk, talk, and talk!!
·Participate - Join French club, come to our French table at lunches or ask how you can further your learning outside of class.

I don’t have lots of rules and, for that reason, when I ask for something from my students, I expect to receive it. Bring your materials daily and be responsible for them.
REQUIRED MATERIALS FOR CLASS:

One Textbook issued by the school

One workbook issued by the school

One notebook specifically for FRENCH notes and other exercises
A folder or binder of some sort for FRENCH tests, paperwork, handouts etc.

Class Assignments & Homework

Minimize

Homework is posted on the board in class daily, it will be announced aloud in class, but also via the parent portal in the online gradebook.

Homework is a completion grade unless otherwise noted and we will go over correct answers at the start of each class or on due dates.  When we check homework, students are expected to get out materials and if they don’t have it, I expect the student to copy down the answers and participate.

If you are sick, have an emergency, problem, question etc, please don’t hesitate to contact me! I DO NOT ACCEPT EXCUSES THE DAY SOMETHING IS DUE! Only in rare cases will it be tolerated.  It’s the responsibility of each student to do work assigned and make sure ALL OTHER GROUP MEMBERS are pulling their weight and doing their share of work.  If you or a group member will be absent the day of a project, TELL ME!! Points will be deducted for late assignments; Minimum of 10 points a day, max of 20 per day late.  Remember, points add up quick to low grades so cover your bases!

Students are encouraged to contact each other when possible to find out pertinent information about class.

Make-Ups

Minimize

Test corrections are encouraged (sometimes mandatory) and useful to the students learning and progress.  If a student fails a test and wishes to re-test they MUST attend one tutorial at least in order to be eligible. I expect students to hang on to MOST of their tests and some handouts in a designated folder or binder (see Materials)

The district re-test policy is as follows:

 1.  Any student not satisfied with a test grade may retest.

  2. A minimum of 1 tutorial must be attended per teacher discretion before retesting.

  3. Retesting must occur in a timely fashion at the teacher's discretion but not exceeding 3 weeks after original test.

  4. The formula to calculate the retest grade is: 1/4x original grade + 3/4 x retest grade.

  5. A student may retest once per test. No limit on number of tests that are retested.

If the student would like to re-take a quiz, this can be done with appointment, typically after school.  If the student cannot make it up then, please speak with me and we can arrange an alternate time/place for this to occur.   There are NO quiz corrections, so please don’t ask,  I view quizzes as a snapshot of the class' learning as well as my teaching.  Its ok NOT to do awesome every  time, this lets you know what YOU need to do!

Tutorials

Minimize

My primary tutoring takes place after school Monday, Tuesday and Thursday after school until 4 pm.  PLEASE let me know if you plan to come, otherwise I take care of other school business or go home.

I can also be available in the mornings (if that works better for you) WITH NOTICE and during lunch time with notice as well.  Should you need to come for tutoring but have a practice or rehearsal, please let me know so that I may clear it with your coach or teacher, especially if you have a low grade or are coming in to bring up a grade.  We all want you to do your best and we'll work together to ensure that happens!

Tutoring will also be available via the French National Honor Society members and this information will also be posted as soon as it is available.
