  • Graduate of Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids Michigan, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Studies and minor in Political Science.                                 Has been coaching gymnastics and cheerleading for the last 11 years. She cheered all four years at West Ottawa High School until 2002 and for the A.G.C. All Star team in college until 2007. This is her 6th year at S.W.H.S. and she recently graduated with a Master's Degree in Administration from Lamar University in 2012.

Course Description:
Eleventh Grade U.S. History traces the U.S.economic development to the present day, making use of a variety of methods and sources.  Students will be expected to analyze, compare, contrast, discuss, debate, and problem solve reaching solutions.
 
Course Objectives:
           Course students will demonstrate an understanding of the historical development of the U.S., including the following topics: Progressives, Imperialism, World War I, Twenties, Depression, Civil Rights, Kennedy, Johnson and Vietnam. We will also discuss the Nixon and Ford Presidencies as well as Carter, Reagan and Bush. 
Students will demonstrate the knowledge, attitudes, and problem solving skills necessary to become successful, productive citizens in a global society. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution as measured by tests, quizzes, projects, or assignments.Students will also demonstrate knowledge of local, national and international affairs.
 
Purpose of the Course:
          To provide an understanding of significant relationships between the past and the present.To provide an awareness of and an understanding of the meaning of our pluralistic society based on democratic principles.To provide knowledge of the structure of our society and the challenges to that structure.To provide an opportunity to read and study about the social, political, and economic institutions that forms the framework for citizenship.
 
Required Texts and other Supplies:
The main text will be The America Republic. In addition, we will be using handouts as we progress through the course and videos will be used as well.
 
Assignments:
Daily assignments will be part of each unit studied and will be an essential part of the evaluation for that unit. Class Participation is an important part of a student’s grade. Class participation means listening to the teacher or other students when the teacher or students are talking during class discussion. There will be a daily participation grade as well as a final class participation grade at the end of each quarter based upon an A – F scale. Attendance is essential. If you are not in class, you will not receive a class participation grade for that day.
 
Grading Policies:
The nine-week’s grade is determined by the following factors: attendance, behavior, class participation, homework, in-class performance tasks, projects, tests, quizzes and extra credit. In addition, a news briefings notebook is required. All grades will be subject to teacher discretion.
