As a police officer in Nashville, Tenn., Ryan Beeler began volunteering at an after-school program for underprivileged students. During this time, he realized his true calling was working with kids and helping them achieve their goals. 

Beeler joined Teach For America, a nonprofit organization that allows leaders to confront educational inequity and help expand opportunities for kids. 

Beeler was placed at Spring Woods High School (SWHS) in 2013 as a science teacher and has been there ever since. 

“My best career decision was to switch from law enforcement  to education,” said Beeler. “I love teaching, and SWHS’ supportive administration and staff have given me the opportunity to thrive. I love working with kids and helping them develop and grow into budding scientists. I can’t imagine spending my life doing anything else.” 

As a science teacher, Beeler enjoys doing experiments and hands-on activities that get students excited about learning. He is also a sponsor for The Woods Project at SWHS, a student-led group that is committed to creating wilderness education and exploration experiences that develop critical behaviors for students.

Every summer, The Woods Project sends students to national parks across the country. Beeler says it is rewarding to travel with students because many have never been on a plane or even outside of Houston before. 

“I love feeling like my job makes a real difference for the next generation,” added Beeler. “At SWHS I have the opportunity to challenge and help students become better individuals. They make coming to school every day worth it. We start the year not knowing each other and leave as a family.”

But his students are not the only ones that keep him at SWHS. 

Beeler notes that he has had many mentors throughout his journey at SWHS. Specifically, Horacio Fernandez, a former assistant principal at the school, was a great friend and always encouraged him in his teaching endeavors. 

He also thanks his fellow teachers and mentions that he continues learning from them daily. 

“The community of teachers at SBISD is amazing,” added Beeler. “If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to ask. There will always be someone on your campus or in the district who will be willing to help!”
