Reading Buddies Begin Another Year of Supporting SBISD Students
SBISD's Reading Buddies are back for another year, bringing community volunteers and second-grade students together to strengthen literacy skills and build meaningful relationships.
Since 2019, Reading Buddies has connected volunteers with students for 30 minutes of reading each week, providing encouragement, consistent support and opportunities to grow as readers.
The program's impact was highlighted in the 2026 Education Scorecard, a research project involving Harvard University, Stanford University and Dartmouth College, which reported:
88% of participating students showed gains in oral reading fluency.
More than 60% of the 340 volunteers counted had served for at least two years.
“We're excited to see so many community members in our schools helping students build their reading skills and showing them that their community cares about their success,” said Christopher Marroquin, Director of Community Engagement.
Thank you to our Reading Buddies for showing up each week, building connections and supporting SBISD's literacy priority and T-2-4 vision for Every Child!

Congratulations to Carolyn Tacker, fifth grade math teacher at Rummel Creek Elementary (RCE) and our October Teachers Driving Success winner! 🎉 From leading her team through the adoption of EnVision to mentoring new teachers, Mrs. Tacker makes a difference across her campus. In her classroom, students think critically, share their ideas and build confidence as they work through challenges. “She’s the best of the best, and we’re blessed she’s ours!” her principal shared. Thank you to Group 1 Automotive for recognizing outstanding SBISD educators and celebrating Mrs. Tacker with a $300 gift card and gift basket. We appreciate your partnership and support of our teachers!
Memorial-Spring Branch Rotary Helps SBISD Graduates Pursue Their Dreams
As SBISD celebrates 80 years of serving students and families, Memorial-Spring Branch Rotary is celebrating an incredible milestone of its own: more than $1.2 million in scholarships awarded to SBISD graduates since 1969!
Each year, the organization awards 10 to 11 scholarships worth $3,000 each, helping graduating seniors pursue higher education and take the next steps toward their futures.
For recipients like Kezia Canady (Spring Woods HS, 2026), Emily Mica (Stratford HS, 2024), Jem Flowers (Spring Woods HS, 2023) and Luke Mica (Stratford HS, 2026), these scholarships have helped ease financial concerns while supporting their college and career goals.
Many recipients hope to give back to the community that invested in them, including Emily, who plans to return to SBISD as an educator, and Luke, who hopes to serve the area as a physician.
Thank you to Memorial-Spring Branch Rotary, its members and community supporters for decades of commitment to SBISD students and their futures!
